This article provides step-by-step instructions to create GS1 QR Codes using Scanova QR Code Generator. This is useful for businesses that follow GS1 standards for product identification and want to manage product-linked redirections dynamically.
A. Introduction
GS1 QR Codes help businesses connect physical products to digital content by embedding standardized GS1 identifiers such as GTIN, batch number, or serial number.
With Scanova, you can create GS1-compliant QR Codes that link to global or custom resolvers, ensuring accurate and traceable redirection for products.
B. Create a GS1 QR Code
Follow these steps to create a GS1 QR Code in Scanova:
- Log in to your Scanova account
- Go to Dashboard > QR Codes > Create QR Code
- From the list of QR Code types, select GS1 QR Code
C. Choose a Resolver
The resolver determines how your GS1 QR Code redirects users when scanned. Select one of the available resolvers:
- GS1 Global Resolver (id.gs1.org): Redirects through the official GS1 global network
- Custom Resolver (Your Domain): Use your own domain for redirection without Scanova management
- Scanova Resolver (scnv.io): Use Scanova’s managed resolver for dynamic redirection, analytics, and flexible URL management
- Scanova-managed Custom Domain: For users with a custom domain managed by Scanova
D. Enter Primary Key Information
Every GS1 QR Code includes a Primary Key—the unique identifier for your product.
Fill in the following details:
- Application Identifier (AI): Select (01) Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)
Scanova supports the following GS1 AIs for encoding structured trade and logistics data:
- (00) Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)
- (01) Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)
- (253) Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI)
- (255) Global Coupon Number (GCN)
- (401) Global Identification Number for Consignment (GINC)
- (402) Global Shipment Identification Number (GSIN)
- (410) Ship To / Deliver To Global Location Number (GLN)

- (8013) Global Model Number (GMN)
- (8017) Global Service Relation Number – Provider
- (8018) Global Service Relation Number – Recipient
-
Value: Enter the 14-digit GTIN (required)
E. Add Key Qualifiers (Optional)
You can include additional qualifiers to provide more product details:
- (21) Serial Number
- (22) Consumer Product Variant
- (10) Batch or Lot Number
These fields are optional but useful for managing variations or tracking production batches.
F. Add data attributes and resolution settings (optional)
If you are using the Scanova Resolver (scnv.io) or a Scanova-managed custom domain, you have the option to configure additional data and resolution preferences for your GS1 QR Codes.
These settings are optional and can be used to enhance how your QR Codes function and track interactions.
- Add data attributes: Include extra metadata such as marketing URLs, campaign identifiers, or product information.
- Adjust resolution settings: Control how your QR Code redirects users—for example, directly to a webpage or through Scanova’s analytics tracking link.
- Choose output method:
- Select Website URL to redirect users to a specific product or landing page.
Note: Configuring data attributes and resolution settings is optional. Your GS1 QR Code will still function correctly even if these options are not enabled.
G. Save and Generate the QR Code
- After entering all details, click Continue
- Customize the QR Code design if required
- Click Create QR Code to generate your GS1 QR Code
You can download the QR Code in preferred formats or edit it later from your dashboard.
H. Best Practices
- Ensure GTINs follow GS1 formatting guidelines (14 digits, no spaces)
- Use Dynamic QR Codes (via Scanova Resolver) for real-time updates and analytics
- Keep your resolver domain active to prevent redirection issues
